| A loom is
a machine for weaving cloth. Early looms date back to the 5th millennium
BC. They consisted of bars or beams fixed in place to form a frame,
that held a number of parallel threads in two sets, alternating with
each other. Weaving was accomplished by raising one set of these threads,
which together formed the warp. With one set raised it was possible
to run a cross thread, the weft, or filling, between them. The block
of wood used to carry the weft strand through the warp was called
a shuttle.
